Marco Rubio threatens to “dismantle” the International Criminal Court (ICC):
This is only the beginning. Using all the tools at our government’s disposal, working beside every ally with whom we can make common cause, we will dismantle the ICC—brick by brick, if necessary.
Rubio wraps his hostility to international law in the American flag. He pretends that the ICC poses some sort of threat to our country. This is nationalistic bluster at its most dishonest.
The administration is going after at the ICC for two reasons: they wish to shield the Israeli government from any consequences for its many crimes in Gaza and elsewhere, and they want to be able to commit their own crimes around the world with absolute impunity. When we set aside all the bloviating about national destiny, that is the core of Rubio’s argument. He wants to destroy the ICC because he wants the U.S. and Israel to be able to trample on international law without paying any price. The administration’s targeting of the ICC is a core part of their effort to make the world safe for war criminals.
